Disney is on a roll! Not only is Disney breaking barriers with making Woody openly bisexual in Toy Story 4, having Elsa be a lesbian in Frozen 2 and are currently working on an all original transgender Disney Princess, Alex Is, Disney is also taking strides towards inclusion by making Mulan a full blown transgender in the 2020 live action remake!
We are all familiar with the story of Mulan. A young warrior princess from China needed to prove her worth by pretending to be male – enforced by the patriarchy. In the 1998 animated feature, Mulan dressed like a boy in order to be accepted in the ranks and fulfill her destiny. In the 2020 live action remake, however, Disney will be taking it a step further by allowing Mulan to take on “her” true identity by transitioning into male as opposed to simply dressing like one.
There will indeed be some minor changes to the overarching story to accommodate this necessary change in detail – but we can trust that Disney’s progressive motives will lead the production in the right direction.
Though is, however, legitimate criticism over Disney’s decision to handle Mulan in this fashion – not for making the protagonist into a transgender – but for casting a Chinese woman as opposed to an African American. More details on this later.
Needless to say, this is a step in the right direction for Disney’s acceptance of the LGBTQ community. Our childhood heroes and heroines will become better versions of their animated selves with each passing remake. We need this in the world now more than ever. Why? Because diversity is our strength.
