If there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s the fact that it’s racist and problematic to refer to people of color as “black” when there are so many other non-white ethnicities in the world. The fact that a Marvel superhero referred to as “Black Widow” is problematic for a multitude of reasons.
First off, she isn’t black. Scarlet Johansson is a privileged cis-gendered white american female who has no idea what it’s like to live life as a culturally oppressed person of color. No matter what her life was like in the comics and canonical story, she is still far more privileged than even the most fortunate person of color.
Second, the term “Black Widow” alludes to the deadly and undesirable black widow spider. Naming anything other than the spider a black widow implies that they are undesirable, inferior and can’t be trusted. Marvel is essentially calling all black individuals undesirable, inferior and devoid of trust.
Marvel had multiple shots at casting a good woman of color to lead a heavy role in the Avengers – yet they decided to go with a white female to play the big part. By default, this makes Marvel sexist, racist and bigoted and anyone who watches or endorses any and all Marvel movies are equally sexist, racist and bigoted.
It doesn’t have to be this way. That’s why there is a cultural push from liberal college students across the country to change the name of “Black Widow” to “Widow of Color” in the upcoming 2020 feature. It will be one step closer to the woke paradise status our country is striving to achieve. One step at a time. Diversity is our strength.
